Two thirds of those who celebrate Christmas said the smell of more traditional ‘Christmas’ aromas gets them in the festive spirit
The nation’s favourite Christmas scents have been unveiled, with the gentle aroma of hot mince pies and festive candles making the cut. But did your preferred fragrance make it onto the list?
A whopping two-thirds of those who celebrate Christmas confessed that traditional festive smells help them get into the holiday spirit.
Based on a survey of 2,000 adults, it’s Christmas fragrances like cinnamon, pine, and gingerbread that bring the festive season alive.
The study revealed that 64% of participants feel transported back to their childhood by these seasonal scents, while 45% associate them with specific individuals.
Yankee Candle, the company behind the research, is touring with it’s immersive Yankee Candle Express, inviting folks to come and experience their favourite aromas in person.
Yankee Candle Fragrance Expert, Taylor Perlis, commented: “The fragrances of the season, from warm cinnamon to freshly baked cookies, can create a powerful connection to the joy and togetherness of the holidays.”
“This research highlights how important these fragrances can be in enhancing our festive spirit, bringing people together with loved ones as they reminisce and enjoy seasonal traditions,” he adds.
Over half of those surveyed admitted to intentionally infusing their homes with festive fragrances. Consequently, 65% place scented candles around their homes, and 43% have even cooked or baked specific foods to generate a particular Christmas smell.
The study also revealed that 43% of people favour spicy or warm fragrances, while 16% are drawn to nature-inspired scents and 15% lean towards food-related aromas.
A spokesperson for Yankee Candle shared: “There are just certain things which, if you close your eyes and pause for a minute, can transport you to a festive memory from past or present as if by magic.”
“Whether that’s the smell of something delicious cooking in the oven, or the smell of a freshly cut pine tree in the living room.”
“This Christmas is a time to enjoy those favourite smells, sights and sounds with loved ones, by lighting a candle, playing some Christmas carols and simply having everyone together.”
