The United States president’s former daughter-in-law, Vanessa, and golf legend Tiger Woods confirmed their relationship earlier this month, with former President Donald Trump addressing the new romance
Donald Trump has thrown his support behind Vanessa Trump’s new relationship with Tiger Woods. While the White House was busy on Monday with Trump signing an executive order targeting ticket scalping and aiming to sort out live event pricing, the buzz within its corridors quickly switched focus to the budding romance between the golf superstar and Vanessa, which they’ve recently made public.
“I love Tiger and I love Vanessa,” declared Trump, before touching on the dynamics that led to the dissolution of Vanessa’s marriage with Don Jr. “They had a great relationship. I happen to think the relationship with my son was hurt very badly by the witch hunt. ‘Russia, Russia, Russia’. All the c*** they put Don through, who knew nothing about it.
“Vanessa and Don had a great relationship, they have five incredible children – all good athletes, all great students. They broke up quite a while ago which to me was very sad because I think they’re both great.”
Woods made the relationship public by sharing photos on social media of the couple spending time together. Alongside two pictures of the couple, Woods wrote: “Love is in the air and life is better with you by my side.”
And Trump revealed that Woods personally informed him of the relationship before going public.
“Tiger actually called me a few months ago,” Trump said, speaking to reporters from the Oval Office Monday. “I have a special, very good relationship with Tiger. I played golf with him a couple of times over the past month and he’s a fantastic guy and a fantastic athlete.
“He told me about it and I said, ‘Tiger, that’s good.’ I’m very happy for both [of them]. Just let both of them be happy.”
Woods, 49, and Vanessa, 47, who both live in Florida, have been together since Thanksgiving. They live 20 minutes apart in the wealthy Florida enclave of Palm Beach and were spotted together at a golf tournament last month.
Vanessa took steps to end her marriage to Don Jr in March 2018, with the pair issuing a harmonious statement confirming the end of their 12 years together.
Their statement at the time read: “After 12 years of marriage, we have decided to go our separate ways. We will always have tremendous respect for each other and our families. We have five beautiful children together and they remain our top priority. We ask for your privacy during this time.”
As reported by the New York Times, multiple factors contributed to Don Jr.’s parting with Vanessa, yet it was an assassination attempt that seems to have been the final straw.
Back in February of 2018, Vanessa and her mum Bonnie Haydon were hospitalised as a safeguard after they encountered an envelope filled with a mysterious white substance. Addressed to Don Jr, the envelope turned out to contain nothing more hazardous than cornstarch, officials later confirmed.
