Wetherspoon will be closing one of its beloved city centre pubs within a few weeks in a blow to pubgoers. The popular pub chain has confirmed that its The Spon Gate branch in Coventry will be closing for good on Saturday, May 25.

The Spoons site on Croft Road is named after one of the 12 gates in the city’s medieval wall which used to be one of the five main entrances to the city back in the 1400’s.

Only two of which remain standing, one at Cook Street and the other at Swanswell Gate. The Spon Gate survived until 1771, when it too was demolished, lending its name to the Wetherspoon pub when it opened in 2010.

According to reports, the decision to close the pub is part of a broader strategy by Wetherspoon, which has seen several of its establishments put up for sale or closed over the last few years. A spokesperson for Wetherspoon said: “It is a commercial decision taken by Wetherspoon. We thank all our staff and customers over the years.”

The closure will leave two Wetherspoon sites left in the city centre, with The Earl of Mercia, on High Street, and The Flying Standard on Trinity Street. Workers at the branch will be offered roles within other Wetherspoon pubs. It is believed that workers at The Spoon Gate, which is named after one of the 12 gates in the city’s medieval wall, will be offered roles elsewhere in the company.

A spokesperson for Wetherspoon said: “It is a commercial decision taken by Wetherspoon. We thank all our staff and customers over the years.”

The Spon Gate is not the only Weatherspoons branch set to close, with another pub shutting in a matter of days. Wetherspoon also announced the closure of The Quay in Poole, Dorset, which is set to close this weekend on Sunday, March 23. The seaside branch will be taken over by new owners, Hall & Woodhouse. The boozer – which sits inside a grade II listed building on the seafront – was taken over by Spoons in 1996.

Last month, the pub chain launched a £2.99 breakfast deal across more than 650 locations in the UK. The new menu – which is served between 8am and 12pm – includes breakfast muffins and small breakfast options priced at £2.99, both served with free refills of hot drinks.

The breakfast muffins consists of a fried free-range egg, Lincolnshire sausage, bacon and American-style cheese, served in an English muffin. For the small breakfast option, diners can enjoy a fried free-range egg, bacon, Lincolnshire sausage, baked beans and a hash brown. Both breakfast deals include a choice of soft drink or unlimited refills of coffee, tea or hot chocolate.

Breakfast pub-goers can also opt for tea and toast at £2.49, this option comes with two slices of toast and a choice of jam or marmalade, alongside free hot drink refills. Vegetarian alternatives are available across all breakfast options on the menu. Punters can also separately purchase Lavazza coffee, Twinings tea or hot chocolate for £1.71, which also includes unlimited refills throughout their visit.

While most locations offer the new breakfast deals at the advertised prices, 117 Wetherspoon pubs will charge £3.99 for the small breakfast, with three venues pricing it at £4.99. Wetherspoon founder and chairman Tim Martin emphasised the company’s commitment to competitive pricing.

He said: “Our pubs are known for offering excellent food and drinks, at great prices. We believe that customers will welcome the value-for-money breakfasts in the pubs.”
