A doctor shared the shedding you’re experiencing with your hair right now may be ‘normal’ due to the change in weather, but urged you to see someone if you notice one thing

Noticed your hair is shedding more recently? You’re certainly not alone, as many people have been searching, ‘Why is my hair shedding so much?’ online. It can make you panic when you see all the strands at the bottom of the bath, and extra in your brush, making you go into fight or flight mode and wondering which products you can purchase to stop this from happening.

But Dr Amy Vowler, a hair restoration doctor, who also practises as an NHS GP, shared this shedding may be “normal” and is potentially just a “seasonal” change, so no need to panic.

Dr Vowler, who posts on TikTok as @thehair.gp, asked: “Are you noticing more hair on your brush this autumn? Don’t panic, it could just be seasonal shedding.”

She explained: “So hair naturally goes through growth cycles, and in the autumn months, more hairs enter the shedding phase.

“This is completely normal, and usually temporary, and your hair will recover as the cycle continues.”

For healthy hair, Dr Vowler recommends “maintaining a healthy diet, reducing stress, and avoiding any harsh treatments”. She said this will “support” your hair journey.

However, she noted: “If you notice excessive shedding or bald patches, always consult a specialist to rule out other causes.”

Thankfully, Dr Vowler, in another post, shared her must-have hair products.

“I’m a hair doctor, but also just a person with hair. Here’s what I actually use to keep my hair strong, healthy, and protected – no secrets, no ads, just my must-haves,” she captioned the post.

First up is the WOW Heat Protector Spray, which she says is her “go to for safe, shiny hair”.

She also recommends a Tangle Teezer brush, as they can “minimise shedding and breakage”. Dr Vowler referred to it as a “little hero,” saying it “gently detangles hair every day without tugging”.

If you’re in the market for a new leave-in conditioner, Dr Vowler recommends the Palmer’s coconut oil leave-in.

She said it “protects hair when it’s the most vulnerable,” saying she uses it “after washing to reduce breakage and keep strands soft”.

Twice a month, she shares she uses the Olaplex Number 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner to “protect” her hair from “styling and heat damage”.

If you’re in need of a hair refresh but just don’t have time to wash it, Dr Vowler recommends the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day dry shampoo.

“I try not to overuse dry shampoo, but this gives instant volume and freshness when needed,” she explained.

At the end of the product carousel, she penned: “Healthy hair isn’t a secret. These are the products I personally swear by – simple, effective, and easy to incorporate.”
