One woman though she might be unfairly judging her mum’s baby name suggestions for her future grandchild, but she’s been told her mum needs a ‘reality check’ after posting about the situation on Reddit

A woman was worried she might be unfairly judging her mum’s baby name suggestions for her future grandchild, but she’s been told her mum needs a “reality check”.

A new baby’s arrival is cause for celebration and it can fill a family with immense joy and excitement. For many people, the prospect of becoming parents – or grandparents – is often a huge source of happiness.

Friends and relatives typically jump at the chance to offer their two pence on the matter, solicited or not. Clearly, it’s vital for parents to pick a name for their little one that doesn’t invite playground mockery or stymie their career later in life – but regardless of other people’s opinions, what the parents decide for their child is the final word.

One woman found herself deeply concerned by the quirky names her mum proposed for her sister’s baby, questioning if her reaction was too judgmental. Taking to the hit Reddit forum Tragedeigh, a hub for discussion and gentle ribbing over unusual or quirky names stumbled across in real life or online, she posted: “Back in October, my mom made a list of baby names for my sister.

“I think these names are kinda silly (I am so glad [my sister] didn’t choose any of them), do y’all think these names are silly or am I just super judgemental?”

‘Silly’ baby name choices

Below her post, she listed the ‘silly’ names her mum had dreamed up, offering separate lists for girls and boys:

Girls

  • Westlynn
  • Taylee
  • Everlee
  • Oaklynn
  • Graylee
  • Graylynn/Graylen
  • Kambree

Boys

  • Westley
  • Zander
  • Oaklee
  • Graylen
  • Grayden
  • Weston
  • Dayson

People were quick to express their opinions in the comments section, with many firmly of the belief the woman was not being judgemental over her mother’s naming suggestions.

One person said: “These look like they were created with one of those things where you choose the first syllable based on the month you were born and the second syllable based on the day lol”.

Another commenter was more blunt, stating: “Your mom needs a reality check. Mine, too. Sorry tho”, while someone else quipped: “Gray, Gray, Oak, Gray, Oak, Gray… is your mom by any chance a squirrel?”

In agreement, another individual jokingly surmised: “Moms favorite color must be gray” and yet another dismissed them all with: “These are all terrible.”

However, not all feedback was negative; one person actually liked a few names: “Westley, Zander, and Weston are fine. I knew people named Westley and Weston and those names didn’t feel out of place. And I have a friend named Alexander that goes by Alex or Zander. Mostly Alex. The rest of the names though? Eugh.”

Someone else said: “Imagine a 40 year old man named Oakley”, while another added: “I’m sensing a theme of west, gray, and oak. Sounds like a furniture line”.
