Today’s puzzle has proved a tricky one, with puzzlers taking to social media in exasperation at how hard the word was to guess with some complaining it was so rarely used as to be almost unknown

Puzzle fans have been left scratching their heads after an unusually tough challenge in the massively popular word game Wordle.

The web-based game, which went viral in 2021, asks players to guess a five letter word in six attempts by entering letters into a grid, being told which letters are in the right and wrong places. Each day a new word is posted and puzzlers try to guess what it is in as few attempts as possible.

The puzzle, invented by Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle for his family and friends, quickly became popular and took Twitter by storm with people posting their results in the form of coloured emoji squares.

In 2022 the New York Times snapped up the hugely popular word game for an undisclosed ‘seven-figure sum’ and earlier this year Wordle celebrated its 1000th daily puzzle go live. The brainteaser boasts millions of fans but as well as giving you something to do on the commute to work, the puzzle also provides a mini-workout for your brain.

However sometimes the word chosen can be fiendishly difficult, causing despair amongst Wordle fans. Today’s puzzle has proved a tricky one with puzzlers taking to social media in exasperation at how hard the word was to guess.

“I wouldn’t say it’s an every day word,” said one fan on X, formerly Twitter. “Second to last guess was vulva though, so in a way it’s an improvement, right?”

Another frustrated user said: “What the actual f**k is Wordle all about today???” While a third commented: “Can’t believe it but chose the right word. Rare word used now but maybe was used in the 1940’s.”

“No chance of ever getting todays Wordle,” said another while another simply asked: “wtf was todays wordle?”

If you are among those finding today’s word impossible to guess, fear not – we have a hint for you: If the challenge is a little too strong for your palate, just be sure to use your Us.

And while you’re struggling with the challenge, take comfort in the fact that it is doing wonders for your brain. Dr Emer MacSweeney, CEO and consultant neuroradiologist at Re:Cognition Health, says: “Keeping the brain and mind active is hugely important for all stages of life, maintaining cognitive function, promoting mental agility and supporting overall wellbeing.”

“There are many cognitive benefits of playing Wordle. Regular play can enhance brain function by stimulating critical thinking, problem-solving skills and memory retention.”
