Costa Rica, in Central America, has been named the world’s ‘friendliest’ country in the annual Conde Nast Traveller 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards, and it’s easy to see why

For many of us, a warm welcome from the locals can elevate a holiday from good to amazing. It could even encourage you to extend your stay or start planning your return visit. Costa Rica has taken the top spot as the friendliest country in the world, according to Conde Nast Traveller’s 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards.

With over 2.4 million visitors in 2023, a record high for tourism, this Central American gem boasts a warm climate, breathtaking landscapes, and outstanding hospitality. Conde Nast Traveller wrote of Costa Rica: “Taking the top spot, Costa Rica is home to dynamic rainforests, world-class surfing and, of course friendly people. ‘Pure Vida’ (meaning ‘pure life’) is their national expression, used by locals as a greeting but also as a guiding principle. Costa Rican lifestyle is centred around positivity and gratitude, and this infectious optimism enriches the outlooks of visitors too.”

With a score of 96.15, Costa Rica leads the pack, offering tourists an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re drawn to its lush rainforests or exceptional surfing spots, it’s the friendly locals that truly set it apart.

The welcoming locals are just one of the many reasons why Costa Rica is a fantastic winter getaway for Brits. With average high temperatures this month hitting a balmy 26C, and sometimes even soaring to a scorching 32C, it’s a country where both the climate and the hospitality are warm – what could be more perfect?, reports the Express.

Costa Rica also prides itself on being eco-conscious, with a quarter of its land safeguarded by conservation reserves. This ensures that the nation’s natural splendour will be preserved for future generations to admire. The country firmly believes that their “health and happiness are tied to the environment.” Boasting 29 national parks, including La Amistad International Park – the largest protected area in the country which it shares with Panama – Costa Rica is recognised as one of the most biodiverse regions globally.

And let’s not forget about the stunning beaches. Scattered across the country are immaculate white-sand havens that are simply unbeatable, making Costa Rica an absolute paradise to visit.
