Former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes has already been linked with a return to the Premier League – and it appears the Lille and England international has plenty of admirers

Manchester United academy graduate Angel Gomes has already hinted that he would be interested in a return to the Premier League.

The 24-year-old prodigy, who was snapped up by United at the tender age of six, waved goodbye to Old Trafford after 14 years at the club to sign for Lille in 2020, where he is still playing today. Since then, Gomes has become an indispensable part of the Ligue 1 side, clocking up 130 appearances.

Yet, with his contract set to expire this summer, the midfielder’s future has been hanging in the balance. The England international, who bagged his first cap under Lee Carsley just last year, didn’t hold back on his thoughts about a potential Premier League homecoming last September.

Since his comments were made, Gomes has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs fans would likely be boosted by his previous comments, alluding to a potential return to England.

During the September international break, when asked if he has ever received any offers to come back to England, Gomes replied: “I have.

“But I believe everything will happen naturally and at its own time and I am really chilled. So, if something was to come up that did make sense, you never know in football.”

Spurs are among the clubs reportedly eyeing Gomes as a solution to their injury woes, which have left them with a staggering 12 first-team players out of action. With the January transfer window deadline looming next Monday, Ange Postecoglou would benefit with some reinforcements.

The north Londoners have reportedly held talks with Gomes and Southampton’s hot prospect Tyler Dibling, but The Telegraph reports these signings are being eyed for the summer window. Meanwhile, Spurs are on the hunt to recruit an outfield player before the January window closes.

According to GiveMeSport, Spurs are not alone in their pursuit, though. London rivals West Ham United and his previous club, the Red Devils, are also in the fray. However, sources say he’s leaning towards a spell at Spurs over joining the Hammers or going back to the roots of his career.

Amid swirling rumours of his next step, Gomes addressed his future over the weekend as Fabrizio Romano shared the player’s comments on the matter.

Over the past weekend, he said: “I’m aware of clubs inquiring about my situation, but I’m now completely focused on Lille. I want to finish the season in the best way possible, and then we will see what happens; I’m focused on the present and not on negotiations.”

Gomes is also enjoying an exciting European campaign with the French giants. They are currently 12th in the Champions League table, but a victory over Feyenoord could see them move into the top eight, guaranteeing progress into the round of 16.
