With endless golden sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a rich history – this stunning EU city boasts 20C temperatures in April, and flights cost less than £30 for return fares
A true melting pot of cosmopolitan offerings and rich history, this magic city really is a modern-day treasure. Built back in the 1570s by the Knights of St John, the City of Valetta was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1980 – making sure its limestone streets and grand bastion walls remain protected.
Snuggled on the east coast of Malta, Valetta is renowned for its plethora of opulent churches, including the famed Saint John Co-Cathedral, which welcomes almost half a million tourists every single year. Holidaymakers can go back in time and witness The Saluting Battery ceremony, where a restored canon is fired Monday through Sunday twice a day.
Valetta is also a great base to explore Malta’s vast landscape, from secluded sandy beaches with cobalt waters to megalithic temples perched atop dramatic sea cliffs. After a long day of exploring, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to picking a snazzy cocktail bar or rooftop restaurant for dinner. As previously reported, Cafe Society and Fat City bar both have stellar reviews, and won’t break the bank.
TikTok user Ralph Travels recently hailed the destination as one of the best hot but cheap European destinations to visit in April. “If you head to Malta in April, you’ll be getting temperatures of at least 20 degrees Celsius,” the content creator said. “I went at the beginning of March – although it was only 17C, in the direct sun it felt way hotter.”
With balmy temperatures and just 2mm of rain for the entire month, visiting Malta is a great option for those wanting to soak up the sun without dealing with scorching levels of heat. Still, it’s worth packing a jacket or two for the evening, as temperatures can drop to around 13C at night.
If you’re visiting Malta, it’s worth taking a short boat ride over to Gozo. This tiny island is packed with natural beauty and similarly stunning sites, and offers a much-needed escape from the droves of tourists. You can read our guide on the island here.

You can fly directly to Malta from most major UK airports, including Glasgow, Belfast, Nottingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Stansted and London Gatwick. If you’re flexible with dates, and don’t require any additional hand luggage, you can grab return fares for as cheap as £28 in April. This climbs up to £88 in the peak summer months.
Finding accommodation in Valetta is easy, as the city offers endless hotels, apartments, and hostels with varying budgets. For example, a week’s stay (Monday, April 7 – 14) in a one-bedroom apartment just 200 yards from the city centre – expect to pay around £668 for two adults sharing.
If you want a more luxurious stay, the five-star Grand Hotel Excelsior has a Superior Deluxe Double Room with Partial Sea View available on the exact same dates for a whopping £1,692. However, with a free gym, large outdoor pool and inside pools – you’ll not want to leave the resort.
