British Gas customers could receive a year’s worth of free electricity and all they need to do is cut down energy use for an hour this weekend. The energy firm is offering 10 British Gas customers the chance to win free energy this Saturday for Earth Hour.

Earth Hour is an initiative to encourage individuals, businesses, and governments worldwide to take responsibility for their ecological and carbon footprint. For 60 minutes, everyone is encouraged to switch off their lights to allow darkness to “spread across the globe.”

Previous Earth Hours have seen major landmarks like the London Eye and Sydney Opera House switch off for one hour. In the UK, the Earth Day hour will begin at 8:30pm and run until 9:30pm.

To encourage even greater action this year, British Gas is rewarding 10 of its PeakSave customers who reduce their electricity usage during the hour with free electricity for a year. Based on the average yearly electricity cost projection, this would sit at £926.

The Peak Save scheme rewards customers with money off their bills for shifting their electricity usage to times when there’s less demand, or more renewable electricity available on the grid. This can be doing a clothes wash, using the oven, or using your tumble dryer. The supplier currently offers its “Peak Save Sundays” which gives half-price electricity between 11am and 4pm.

With Preak Save Sundays, British Gas customers don’t need to opt in, they get the 50% discount on electricity automatically. The savings appear as “PeakSave Credit” on your energy bill and you will be sent a summary of what you have saved each month.

Those who prepay for their electricity will have their credit automatically added to their meter each month – normally within 10 working days after the month ends.

British Gas launched its Peak Save events in December 2022 and according to the energy supplier over 800,000 people have saved more than £20million to date through it.

You can sign up for the scheme on the British Gas website by entering your full name, email address, and customer reference number. If your application is successful, the supplier will contact you and credit back any money saved after taking part each week. To join the saver scheme, you will need to have a working smart meter that can send half-hourly readings.

It’s important to note that the Peak Save events do not change the tariff you are on. This does remain the same. This is because you are charged the rate of your tariff and then refunded the extra.

John Evans, Commercial Director at British Gas, says: “Earth Hour is a powerful reminder that small actions can make a difference- not only to the environment but for 10 lucky PeakSavers who can win free electricity for a year. To be entered into a prize draw to win free electricity, our PeakSavers just need to use less electricity during Earth Hour than they usually would during this time.”
