The man, thought to be a 49-year-old from Scotland, got into difficulties while diving with friends at around 11am today at Cala d’Or – a resort area on the southeast coast of Majorca

A British man has died after getting into difficulties whilst diving off the coast of Majorca with four pals.

According to local reports, the male was described as being Scottish and aged 49. He began facing trouble in the water at around 11am today at Cala d’Or – a resort area on the southeast coast of the holiday island. Four dive companions, thought to be friends, are said to have been with him at the time and helped him out of the water.

They began trying to resuscitate the man before medical emergency responders took over after he reached dry land. But tragically, nothing could be done to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Civil Guard have launched a routine investigation. The police force could not be reached for comment this afternoon. It was not immediately clear if the dead man was holidaying in Majorca or lived on the island.

At the start of the month a 75-year-old British man was found dead after going diving by the Malgrats Islands, two uninhabited islets opposite the Bay of Santa Ponsa a short drive from the holiday resort of Magaluf.

A Civil Protection boat made the grim discovery around 4pm on October 1 and recovered his body before taking it to Santa Ponsa Yacht Club. He is understood to have been wearing just a mask and swim shorts when he was found. A friend had reported him missing.

A police source said shortly after the tragic discovery: “The death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.” Officials did not say whether they had established drowning as cause of death, or think he suffered a previous health problem before getting into difficulties. The Civil Guard had been reporting to a court in Palma ahead of a post-mortem.

The Malgrats Islands Natural Reserve is a snorkelling hotspot, with island firms offering various tours of the area, including through its fascinating cave system and crystal clear waters. The tours also have a hotel pick-up and return service and supply of mask, snorkel fins and wetsuit if necessary as well as a boat ride to the snorkel area.
