Kieran Tierney has found himself out of favour at Arsenal, with the left-back’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, and now Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed the player will join them this summer at the latest

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Arsenal star Kieran Tierney will return to the club this summer at the latest, with the left-back’s contract expiring at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old joined Arsenal for a reported £25million in 2019 and was the club’s first choice left-back for the first few seasons before he fell down the pecking order. The Scottish star joined Real Sociedad on loan last season and and only played five games this term.

There had been speculation Tierney could finally leave the club in the January transfer window after featuring for just 101 minutes in this campaign and Rodgers confirmed Celtic had clinched a deal to sign him.

Speaking ahead of the club’s Champions League trip to Aston Villa on Wednesday, Rodgers said: “Ideally it would (happen in January) but he’s still at this moment an Arsenal player.

“I think everyone is agreed that will definitely take place in the summer. If we can do it beforehand, then great.”

Tierney initially lost his place in the team to Oleksandr Zinchenko, but after the arrival of left-back Riccardo Calafiori this summer he slipped even further out of Arteta’s plans.

His time in north London has been blighted with injury problems, suffering a total of ten fitness issues in the last six years.

He came on in the dying minutes of their 1-0 win over Wolves on Saturday but hasn’t started a game since the 3-2 win over Palace in the Carabao Cup on December 18.

It was reported Celtic had opened talks with Tierney over a pre-contractual agreement and now the Scotland international will have a chance to add to the huge success he enjoyed with his boyhood club.

Tierney made 170 appearances for Celtic between 2014 and 2019 and won the Scottish Premiership four times. He also won two Scottish Cups and two League Cups.

At Arsenal, he would go on to win the FA Cup in 2019-20 as he managed a total of 129 appearances for the Gunners.
