Three businesses, two of which are kiosks, have been hit with fines in Tenerife after operating on tourist filled beaches without the correct authorisation.
Authorities have clamped down on three unauthorised businesses on a popular Tenerife beach by issuing them with steep fines. The small businesses were operating on beaches in Las Americas and Los Cristianos – two popular resorts with British tourists – and a surf school in El Medano.
According to Canarian Weekly, the biggest fine of £11,568 was slapped on a kiosk in Playa de Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos by Provincial Coastal Service of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It was punished for “encroaching on public maritime-terrestrial land without administrative approval.” The beach itself is a hit with tourists, with large expanses of golden sands. There are businesses operating on the promenade, including restaurants, bars and shops.
The second fine was for a similar issue, in Playa del Bobo in Playa Las Americas. A smaller kiosk, said to be four metres with a terrace of the same size, was fined £3,569 for breaking coastal land regulations. Playa del Bobo beach is a similarly tourist-friendly beach, sunken below a large parade of shops and restaurants.
A third fine of £1,239 was issued to a surf school for holding windsurfing and kitesurfing lessons for profit without the correct authorisation for use of the land. Canarian Weekly added that the affected business owners have 15 days to check the information and possibly appeal, as per the notification issued by Boletín Oficial de la Provincia de Santa Cruz de Tenerife (BOP).
Tenerife maintains a warm climate in December with an average temperature of 24C, making it a top European destination for tourists. People often frequent the popular coastlines all year round, with tourists and expats saying people often visit on Christmas Day for a festive dip. The sea temperature is nothing like the freezing depths of the UK’s, with an average of 21C.
According to TUI: “There is a 64% chance of a perfect sunny day and a 36% chance of seeing some clouds, with on average 1mm of rainfall this month.”
