Cleaning windows is one task, but finishing it without leaving huge streaks across the glass can be a nightmare – luckily there’s a knack.

Hiring window cleaners can be a massive chore – but luckily there is a much easier, and cheaper, way to clean them at home. Plus, you more than likely already have this item lying around in your cupboard.

It’s an easy task to put off, but a dirty window will do more than obscure your view. Leaving dust, debris and all kinds of insect matter to build up on your windows can exacerbate allergies and ruin your air quality. Even worse, it can promote the growth of mould and mildew, which not only smell bad, but potentially lead to serious health issues like lung infections.

Fortunately, cleaning expert and co-CEO of Aspen Clean Alicia Solowski has concocted a fool proof way to clean the inside of your windows that won’t take all day. All you need is white vinegar, microfibre cloths and a squeegee.

Step one

First you should combine equal parts white vinegar and water in a bucket. Optionally, you can also add some drops of washing up liquid.

Step Two

Use a dry microfibre cloth to wipe away any dust and dirt from the window. It’s important to use microfibre, as it will absorb more dirt and won’t damage the glass.

Step three

Now dip a clean microfibre cloth into the vinegar solution. Proceed to wipe the window in an ‘S’ pattern. Move slowly from left to right.

Step four

Take a squeegee, start at the top of the window, then pull it down in a straight motion. This will avoid creating any streaks.

Following these steps should leave your windows gleaming. Alicia also says the same cleaning mixture can be used to wash your windowsill. All you need to do is vacuum away the dust and then wipe any extra stains away using a cloth dipped in the vinegar solution. You can use a toothbrush to scrub away tougher dirt, then wipe clean using a dry microfibre cloth.

After everything has dried, you can stand back and assess the window. If you notice any streaks, simply buff them out using a dry, clean cloth.

If you don’t have any vinegar lying around, no need to worry. A litre bottle of ASDA Distilled Vinegar can be bought for £1.09, while Hexeal Pure Value White Vinegar (5 litres) can be ordered from Amazon for a bargain £5.75.
