Dancing on Ice: Stephen Mulhern ‘concerned’ after ‘mishearing’ a song title

Fans have shared their thoughts on a joke delivered by Stephen Mulhern on Dancing on Ice (DOI) recently.

Stephen, 47, fronted Sunday night’s episode of the ITV show with his co-host Holly Willoughby, 43. The presenting duo introduced the remaining contestants ahead of their latest performances and there were some jokes during the episode.

Introducing reality TV star Chris Taylor and his skating partner Robin Johnstone for their next routine, Holly referenced their performance being set to JVKE’s song Golden Hour. She said ahead of the pair taking to the ice: “Right, it’s time for our next couple who are treating us to a golden hour.”

Stephen teased that he had misheard Holly’s comment in an apparent reference to the crude act of a ‘golden shower’. He said: “A what?” Holly replied: “A golden hour. It’s the name of a song.” Stephen teased: “Oh, phew! It’s Chris and Robin.” Laughter was then heard elsewhere in the studio.

The skit didn’t go unnoticed by viewers, with some sharing their thoughts on X. Amid concern over the joke, celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo was brought up. Gino is facing accusations of “distressing” and “sexually inappropriate” behaviour over several shows following an ITV News investigation. “Dozens” of people are said to have detailed experiences described variously as “unacceptable,” “distressing” and “horrendous” while working with him over a period spanning more than 12 years. He has however firmly denied the allegations.

Following Stephen’s comments, one viewer wrote: “With @ITV being in the midst of the Gino scandal, you’d think they’d be a bit more careful about golden shower jokes on a family show.” Someone replied: “He said golden hour.” The original poster responded: “He joked that he’d misheard it as golden shower.” Another viewer replied to the original post: “I said the same thing. Mulhern has better take care….”

One viewer said in a post: “Stephen just tried to allude that the dance was about a ‘golden shower’ it was a joke…. How many did he offend at 18:30 on a Sunday night? @Ginofantastico #dancingonice.” They also described the joke as “smut” in response to someone else watching.

They wrote in the other post: “But Steve made a very bad joke about it being a ‘golden shower’ it’s a Sunday evening, 6:30… we don’t need smut.” It came in response to a fan who had written: “Golden hour is one of my favourite songs EVER!!! it truly encapsulates a ‘golden hour’ – and it makes me think of my mom every time i hear it!!! also… I NEED Chris’s outfit IMMEDIATELY.”

The critic wasn’t alone in reacting to the sketch involving Stephen and his co-host Holly on the latest episode of DOI on the weekend. One viewer wrote on the platform: “Wasn’t prepared for a golden shower joke at 6.34pm on a Sunday…”

Dancing on Ice continues next Sunday on ITV and ITVX.
