EastEnders star Cheryl Fergison reveals latest gig details

EastEnders icon Cheryl Fergison has given fans an update on her career – revealing she’s landed a new singing gig.

The 59-year-old soap star became a national treasure when she played Heather Trott in the BBC soap from 2007 until 2012 – when she was brutally killed off by villainous Albert Square resident Ben Mitchell, played at that point by Joshua Pascoe. In the intervening years, Cheryl has appeared in the sitcom Big School, the drama White Island and the mockumentary Hard Cell – among others.

This weekend, the star revealed to fans that they could see her live on stage in the seaside town of Cleveleys in Lancashire where she promised to entertain the crowds all weekend. Taking to Instagram, the actress highlighted her show – and encouraged fans to come on down and see her.

She said: “Hello folks! Tonight, the first of February, and tomorrow, Sunday the second, I’m hosting at the Dragon Lounge on Victoria Road West in Cleveleys. It’s going to be a fun couple of days, so please come and join us. I’ll be there from about 7 o’clock onwards – just turn up or call ahead.”

She explained in a further video: “New business, new chef, new owners – there will be some old faces as well. Including my own.” And teasing fans further, she then quipped that there would be enough space for everyone at the venue: “Even if you’re sitting on my lap.”

Fans were quick to react to Cheryl’s post and send her encouragement with one writing: “Aw, have a great time.” And another declared: “Love cheryl” alongside a string of red heart emojis. And a further fan wrote: “Wish I could get there hope you have a incredible night.”

Her new gigs come after Cheryl revealed she had resorted to selling old memorabilia from her EastEnders days as she struggled to make ends meet. She said in an interview last year: “I do not want to get into trouble in any way and maybe £50 to some people is not a lot of money, but when it can help to pay an ever-increasing bill or help put a roof over your head and food on the table, just like any other person earning a living, I will continue to buy and sell – and pay tax on it.”

Fans have been petitioning for Cheryl to get some work in a musical after being left in awe when she belted out songs from The Greatest Showman at a Pride event in Brighton last summer. When footage from her gig went viral, one stunned fan wrote online: “The last thing I thought I would see when I woke up this morning was Heather from EastEnders doing a Greatest Showman megamix. But she ate.”

Sharing her own love for Pride at the time, Cheryl wrote in an online message: “Brighton and Hove is where it’s all at folks, we are here to celebrate Pride … to be with LGBTQ+ families , communities groups and friends … proving to the world that we can all live together and contribute to making this world a better place. What is important to the body , heart , soul and mind is to live your life the way you know is right for you. Acceptance, patience & tolerance is what we all strive for and of course education is the key. Never stop teaching and never stop learning.”

And at the end of last year, she wowed fans again when she appeared at a venue in Blackpool where she impressed by singing a medley of songs while effortlessly downing a pint. Footage from the night showed the singer performing tracks by The Marvelettes and Bob Marley, among others.
