Job adverts were printed on loo roll and placed in toilets across University of Nottingham in a bid to attract soon-to-be graduates

One of the UK’s leading hygiene and health employers has launched an innovative new way of reaching out to recruits – by printing its job ads on toilet paper.

The toilet rolls, featuring job descriptions, were placed in university toilets in Nottingham, home to a renowned engineering school. Essity, the company behind the initiative, aims to attract graduates and potential talent in engineering and manufacturing.

According to research by the company, university students find job hunting overwhelming, with 21% unsure where to begin post-graduation. A third are concerned that the competition is too fierce for them to secure a job or that they’ll end up in a role they don’t want to be in.

Gareth Lucy, spokesperson for the hygiene and health company, said: “We want to create a pipeline of talented individuals who have the potential to become the future leaders of our company.”

“As we specialise in the production of toilet paper in the UK, it felt like the obvious way of getting our message out there. Our research shows that looking for a graduate position can be daunting, so we wanted to make it very easy and relevant to what we do.”

“Anyone interested can scan a QR code on a sheet of the loo roll and it will take them straight through to our website.”

Despite being anxious about next steps – a quarter said they dread finishing university because they’ll have to look for work – 96% know for certain, or at least have some idea, of the type of jobs they want to apply for once they’ve finished studying.

Over half are hoping their first job will be related to what they’re studying now and three quarters have already started looking into potential careers. Mostly, they’ve been getting advice from university services or their lecturers, but are also using online career guidance websites and social media.

When it comes to choosing a career, 45% are keen to find something that gives them a good balance between work and life. A nice working environment alongside room to grow is also a priority.
