It’s the perfect solution for people who don’t like to use harsh chemicals in their homes – and it’s not just easy, it’s also incredibly cheap to do to the microwave

Microwaves are a blessing for whipping up quick meals – but they can be a nightmare to clean.

Scraping off yesterday’s burnt leftovers from the corners is hardly appetising, and microwaving your food in a grease and crumb-filled box isn’t either. This could not only hamper your microwave’s efficiency but also pose a health risk if harmful bacteria contaminates your food.

Thankfully, there’s an easy way to remove even the most stubborn stains and grime in just five minutes. You don’t need pricey, chemical-heavy products or any elbow grease. The cleaning experts at Homeworks Design have shared a brilliant hack for cleaning your microwave on a recent TikTok video. They simply put around 500ml of white vinegar (two cups) into a microwave-safe bowl and place it uncovered in the appliance.

Then, they microwave this natural cleaner for five minutes before letting it sit for another five. After that, they carefully take out the bowl and wipe it clean with a damp cloth – and voila, your microwave will look as good as new.

If you don’t have any vinegar in your kitchen, you can grab a bottle from most supermarkets. Tesco’s white vinegar is currently price-matched with Aldi, so it’ll only cost you 35p for a 568ml bottle. Or if you prefer shopping online, you could get a 5l bottle on Amazon for ?6.99.

If you’re not too keen on the smell, you can also try this hack using water and just a tablespoon of white vinegar. Savvy mum Joan Walsh swears by this trick and says she does it “all the time”. “Get a microwave safe jug or bowl of water and fill it halfway up with water, then add a tablespoon of white vinegar,” the Westport-based parent added.

“Microwave for about five minutes,” she said. “The water will steam up and soften any burnt on or dried up food, so it can easily be wiped away.”
