As spider mating season begins, one woman has shared her simple 16p solution to keep the critters at bay and out of your home

A clever cleaning guru has shared her budget-friendly 16p hack to keep spiders at bay during their breeding season, as droves of the eight-legged creatures are set to invade homes throughout Britain.

Insta-famous @my.horsford, who doubles as a CI Group ambassador, has spilled the beans on a nifty method to repel these unwelcome guests, as reported by the Express. In light of spider mating season and the impending influx of amorous arachnids into homes or conservatories, she’s offered some helpful advice.

She said: “With mating season bringing unwanted randy eight-legged visitors into your home or conservatory, this tip is for you.” Revealing her ingenious trick, she recommended: “Get an empty spray bottle. If you don’t have one, you can always repurpose and clean out an old spray bottle from another product.” She further directed: “Fill the bottle with water, and add 10 drops of tea tree essential oil into the mixture. You can also use peppermint, lemon or lavender,” reports the Daily Record.

Highlighting the affordability of her suggestion, she mentioned: “The average bottle of essential oils costs about £4, so just 10 drops is a bargain.” Hillary concluded with how-to details, saying: “Spray and wipe along the window sills and door frames with a dust cloth to deter the spiders because they don’t like strong scents.”

She also included additional preventative steps, advising: “To stop spiders in their tracks you could also put a few drops of tea tree oil around openings into your home such as windows, doors, or any cracks.” Spider mating season, which typically begins at the end of August and lasts until October, sees male spiders abandoning their webs to seek female partners. They are drawn indoors by the allure of warmth and appropriate humidity levels.

Matt Forrest, the managing director of CI Group, spoke about this seasonal invasion, saying: “As temperatures are dropping, spiders and other critics are crawling into homes in search of a mate and a more humid climate to thrive in. The most effective way to control the humidity in your home and keep critters at bay is through insulation.”
