Apple’s iOS18.2 software is believed to include a new feature called ‘BatteryIntelligence’, which will inform iPhone users how long it will take for their device to fully charge

A long-awaited charging feature may be coming to iPhones, as Apple gets ready to launch its iOS 18.2 update.

We’ve all been in that situation where we’re getting ready to go out and realise our phone is almost flat. If you’ve been waiting until the Uber is outside before unplugging your phone and hoping you’ll have enough juice to last the night – your problems may soon come to an end.

That’s because experts have reportedly found that the code of iOS 18.2 beta 2, which was released last month to developers, features a new framework dubbed ‘BatteryIntelligence’ – and it could be used to tell you how long you will need to charge your phone to get to 100 per cent battery.

“[This] will calculate the estimated time to recharge the phone, most likely based on the amount of energy being received by the device,” said experts over at 9to5mac. “Users will have the option of receiving a notification with an estimate of how long it will take for the charge to reach 80 per cent, for example.”

9to5mac added that although the feature could be seen in the coding, it was ‘disabled and unfinished’ which means Apple may still be working on it. Macbook users may already be familiar with such a feature, as many MacOs systems show the battery’s status in the menu bar – a long with how long it will take to fully charge the battery.

Apple has not commented on the BatteryIntelligence feature, and has kept quiet about the specifics of iOS18.2. The software update is expected to launch at some point this month on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 devices.

What features will be in Apple’s iOS18.2?

iOS18.2 is said to bring with a slew of new features, including Image Playground: an app that lets you use concepts, descriptions, and people from your photo library to create fun, playful images in multiple styles. ChatGPT, a popular AI system, will also be integrated with Siri and the Writing Tools app.

New camera controls using visual intelligence will also allow you to learn about places or subjects simply by pointing your camera at it, according to reports. The Mail app is also slated to get a huge revamp, with ‘Mail Categorisation’ sorting your messages to help you stay on top of important communications; while Safari will see new background images to customise your Start Page.
