The Princess of Wales was first spotted in her designer denim dress meeting Sir David Attenborough in 2020 and Marks and Spencer have just dropped a similar style for less than £40
Back in September 2020, Vogue reported that Kate Middleton wore a belted denim dress by designer Gabriela Hearst when meeting with Sir David Attenborough at Kensington Palace. Called the Marley dress it was part of the fashion brand’s pre-fall 2020 collection and is still available to buy at Mytheresa in a darker hue for a cool £1,225.
If that’s a little out of your budget, savvy shoppers are in luck as Marks & Spencer has dropped a new style that looks very similar to the royal-approved pick – but for a lot less. The Denim Collared Zip Front Midi Waisted Dress retails for £39.50 and is stocked in light blue denim like Kate’s ensemble, or a dark black denim.
Made from pure cotton, it features a look-alike collar, waist-cinching silhouette and midi-length skirt. It’s also been given a contemporary twist, instead opting for buttons, it boasts a zip front through the bodice. The long sleeves are gathered at the shoulder and cuff for gentle volume, giving it a finish that combines modern and classic styling.

It comes in sizes six to 24, but unlike some of Marks and Spencer’s designs it is only stocked in a regular fit, not petite or tall. As it is new to the Marks and Spencer website, it hasn’t received any reviews yet but if it is anything like this similar Denim Midi Waisted Dress from M&S at the same price, it shouldn’t disappoint.
Speaking of the Denim Midi Waisted Dress, one person said that they were ‘looking forward to wearing with boots, a winter coat and a lovely colourful scarf’, plus that it is a ‘great dress to dress up or down’. The same feedback can also be applied to the Denim Collared Zip Front Midi Waisted Dress.
Kate styled her dress with heeled court shoes for the special occasion, but we love the idea of pairing the Marks and Spencer denim dress with a lightweight jacket and boots. As the chic midi is made from 100% cotton, it will be breathable, making it an ideal layering piece for autumn and winter.
More recently, Kate Middleton sported this exact dress from Whistles on her first public engagement since finishing chemotherapy. The polka dot style is currently still in stock online in a number of sizes ranging from four to 14 and it’s on sale down to £99, originally £149.
Alternatively, Kate has also previously worn items by the fashion brand Reiss – the Elsa Belted Denim Midi Dress was £228 but is on sale for £108. For a cheaper high street option, consider the Jade Denim Shirt Dress from White Stuff. It has been reduced from £79 to £32 and is still available in sizes six to 20.
