Liam Payne fans around the world have called for a ‘permanent memorial’ in the form of a statue or mural in his hometown of Wolverhampton

Thousands of Liam Payne fans have signed a petition calling for a statue or mural to commemorate the late singer to be erected in his hometown.

The One Direction star tragically died on October 16 at the age of just 31 after falling from a third floor balcony of the hotel he was staying at in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was laid to rest following a private funeral in Buckinghamshire last week, close to where he owned a home near ex Cheryl, who he shares seven-year-old son Bear with.

Now Liam’s fans want a permanent reminder of the singer in Wolverhampton, where he grew up – and where his parents Karen and Geoff still live. A Change.org petition has been signed by almost 6,000 people so far, that are not just locals but from around the globe.

It said: “The recent passing of Liam Payne has touched the hearts of many, not just the unbreakable community of One Direction fans, but people worldwide. As individuals who have been profoundly impacted by the loss of this amazing talent, we ask for a permanent structure or mural to be erected in Wolverhampton in his honour.”

The petition continued: “Liam Payne’s artistry has reached out and touched countless lives. His music was a harmonious blend of inspiration and comfort that resonated in the hearts of millions. His life and legacy deserve to be commemorated in a way that is as enduring as the light he imparted unto the world.

“By erecting a permanent structure in Wolverhampton, we are ensuring that Liam Payne is remembered for generations to come. This memorial will not only serve as a place to pay respects, but also a reminder of the incredible impact that individuals can make on the world.”

It proposes the city partners with local artists to “create a memorial that reflects the spirit and essence of Liam Payne – his roots, his musical journey, and his incredible contribution to the international music community.” The petition continued: “This act of remembrance can provide comfort and solace to those who have been touched by his life and passing.”

“Let us honour Liam Payne’s legacy in a lasting way. A way that allows people from all walks of life to find a space to remember him and the joy his music brought into their lives. There is no better tribute to a man who dedicated his life to reaching people through his art,” it added.

And fans are here for it, with one writing underneath that “Liam Payne should have a place where his fans should be allowed to go” to remember him. They continued: “He’s loved and well missed by many. I have seen how the fans sing and light candles and have made places for themselves. Let’s have somewhere we can all go and say a few words.”

Another wrote: “I’m signing this petition because Liam and One Direction changed the world. They are the band that changed lives and a generation. Honour him the way he deserves for his legacy and for his family. The industry and public failed him. Let’s give him a final moment to shine.”

A third commented: “Liam deserves to be remembered – and where better than his hometown.” A fourth said: “He deserves it with all of the good that he done for others and just for being the kind hearted, gentle soul that he was.”

While a fifth added: “It would be beautiful for his son Bear to look at as he grows and for Liam’s parents. It would be amazing for fans who adored him to pay our respects. If only he could see how loved he truly was. He has left a massive impact on more people than he could have imagined. I believe Liam should be remembered for many generations to come. My little ones are going to grow up listening to Liam, both solo & with 1D. This memorial can help with the grief and is the least he deserves.”

Council leader Stephen Simkins told the BBC it was “right that we recognise every son and daughter from Wolverhampton that’s been an absolute asset to us.” But he made it clear that any lasting memorial to Liam would only go ahead with the permission of the singer’s family.
