Lidl, which has more than 1,000 stores across the UK, has recalled Alpenfest Style Salted Mini Pretzels covered in milk chocolate, and those covered in dark chocolate
Lidl has recalled two mini-pretzel products amid warnings the snacks may cause a burning sensation when eaten.
Shoppers have been warned the pretzels are unsafe to eat and so they should return all stock with particular batch codes to their nearest supermarket to claim full refunds.
It is unclear what has led to these particular batches becoming dangerous but the German supermarket group’s UK arm has displayed notices in its branches here and online to warn consumers.
The Alpenfest Style Salted Mini Pretzels covered in milk chocolate, and those covered in dark chocolate, are the products affected, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said today.

According to the FSA, the products may cause a burning sensation in the mouth “potentially causing discomfort and making them unsafe to the consumer”.
Customers are asked to return all stock with the best before date of June 30 2025 and batch code 8535 to a Lidl store, for a full refund. Lidl has more than 1,000 supermarkets in the UK, all of which are said to be affected by this. Notices will be displayed in all retail stores.
The FSA website adds: “The products may cause a burning sensation in the mouth when consumed… If you have bought the product, we advise you not to eat it.”
The warning comes after Sainsbury’s urged anyone who has bought a six-pack of a canned fizzy drink to return it to store immediately. The supermarket sent out an email to its customers on Thursday with instructions if they have bought multi-packs of Appletisers. It says: “Sainsbury’s have been made aware that Appletiser are recalling the above products as they may contain an elevated level of chlorate. We are asking customers that have purchased the above products not to consume them and to return them to their nearest Sainsbury’s store, where they will receive a full refund.
“For any further information please contact 0800 227711. No other products have been affected by this issue. Appletiser would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.” The recall has come after certain batches imported to the UK were feared to contain elevated levels of chlorate, which if consumed in large quantities, can affect people’s health.
Chlorate is a chemical compound which comes from chlorine disinfectants. It is used in food processing and water treatment, and according to the FSA, poses a low risk when consumed only occasionally.
