Nicole Scherzinger has apologised to her followers after she left a controversial comment on an Instagram post on comedian Russell Brand’s page
Nicole Scherzinger has apologised to her fans as she issued a heartfelt apology for her controversial comment she left on comedian Russell Brand’s Instagram page.
The 46-year-old Pussycat Dolls singer said that she recognised the “hurt” she had caused after she commented on a photo that Brand had posted in which he was holding a hat in support of Donald Trump, who was elected the new US President last week.
Controversial comedian Brand, 49, was wearing a red baseball cap with the words “Make Jesus First Again” emblazoned across after the Republican’s historic presidential victory. The hat was in the style of those worn by Trump supporters which has his ‘Make America Great Again’ rhetoric.
Nicole surprised her fans when she commented on the post, which was shared after Trump took power in the United States, with: “Where can I get this hat!?”
There was an immediate backlash to the comment, with many claiming that they would boycott the singer before the post was deleted, but the damage had seemed to have been done prompting Nicole to issue an apology.
Writing in black text on a white background, Nicole wrote: “I deeply apologize for the hurt caused by my recent engagement with some social media posts. When I commented on these posts, I made the mistake of not realising that they could be easily interpreted as being politically related and I apologise to anyone who understandably reached that conclusion.
“Many presumptions are being drawn, which do not reflect who I am, what I stand for, or who I voted for. Many of the marginalised communities feeling hurt and concerned by the results of the presidential election are people I care about most.”
Nicole added: “I stand with them, as I always have, throughout my life and career. If you know me, you know that. Like so many others, in times of adversity and uncertainty, I turn to my faith. I believed that the posts I engaged with were about encouraging people to choose love and faith — ‘putting Jesus first.’”
The pop star concluded: “For me Christ embodies peace, compassion, hope, and above all — unconditional love, especially for those who may feel it the least right now. I come from a place of love, and I will always support values that bring us closer together.”
Russell Brand has caused controversy previously and Channel 4 were forced to probe his time with the channel after a string of allegations were made against him. In September last year, a joint investigation between the broadcaster and The Sunday Times and The Times found five women who came forward to accuse him of rape, assault and emotional abuse between 2006 to 2013.
