Patti Smith fell on stage during a performance on Wednesday night – with fans watching anxiously as she was taken away in a wheelchair. She has now updated on her condition.

Patti Smith has given a health update after she passed out live on stage – forcing to her cancel upcoming tour dates.

The 78-year-old music icon had been performing with band Soundwalk Collective in São Paolo, Brazil on Wednesday when she fell and hit her head on the stage. The People Have The Power singer had been touring with the experimental sound group in North and South America – but has been forced to pull out of future performances due to the incident.

Reports revealed she fell midway through a concert on Wednesday and had to be placed in a wheelchair to be taken away for treatment. Fans were stunned, however, when she later returned to the stage in order to perform one of her most iconic songs, Because the Night.

Soundwalk Collective later issued a statement about Patti’s health, revealing she had been suffering from a migraine before her fell and initially shared hope that a performance the following night would carry on as planned. However, the concert was later pulled – but now the singer herself has issued a statement in order to reassure her fans that she is recovering well.

Taking to Instagram on Thursday, Patti shared a smiling photograph of herself waving at the camera and shared details of her health scare. She wrote: “This is letting everyone know that I am fine.

A grossly exaggerated account is being spread by the press and social media. I had some post migraine dizziness. Had a small i incident, left the stage, and returned 10 minutes later and talked to the people, told them I was fine and sang them Wing and Because the night.”

She continued: “I was checked out by an excellent Doctor and was absolutely fine. Please do not accept any other story. With all the strife in the world, this explainable incident does not merit so much attention.”

Sharing her appreciation for the concerns her fans had shown, she concluded: “Thank you everyone for your concern. Trust me I am fine.” Fans reacted to the update to send her more messages of support – with one writing: “Thank you beautiful Patti for all that you give. Wishing you all the good things today and always. You are pure love.”

Patti’s update came as Soundwalk Collective confirmed they had been forced to cancel Thursday night’s gig. They wrote in an online statement: “Dear friends in São Paulo, it is with much sadness that we decided to cancel tonight’s performance at Teatro Cultura Artistic. Patti is now recovering strongly but our caring doctors say she needs a little more time to be at her best.”

The group added: “We can’t be thankful enough for your continuous love, support and understanding, and for all the messages and wishes of swift recovery that we have received. We can’t wait to be back in São Paulo as soon as possible.”

Footage of Wednesday night’s concert has circulated online – showing Patti collapsing on stage and later returning to address fans. She said on the night; “You’ve been so patient and unfortunately I got sick and the doctor said I can’t finish so we will have to figure something. I feel very badly.” While a statement from the theatre declared: “She’s being attended to by the best doctors and our team.”
