The little village was previously called the ‘prettiest in England’

With the clocks going back and colder temperatures here to stay, it’s the ideal time to book a cosy winter staycation. Luckily, the UK is home to some beautiful destinations, with popular spots up and down the country.

If you’re feeling short of inspiration, there’s a picturesque village that’s previously been called the ‘prettiest’ in England that’s well worth a visit this winter. Nunney is a quiet village located right in the heart of the West Country, in the Mendip district of Somerset.

The village is steeped in history, much of which is still evident today. Its medieval castle, quintessential village pub and beautiful surroundings are particular highlight for visitors.

The French-style castle, which was originally built for Sir John Dalaware in 1371, is surrounded by a deep moat and is said to have been based on the Bastille in Paris. The walls are still largely intact and it is “in perfect scale with its surroundings”, according to Visit Somerset.

Keen walkers will be pleased to discover the village trail. Available from Frome’s Tourist Information, the trail is the best way to explore the village’s points of interest.

If you’ve worked up an appetite while exploring Nunney, you may be tempted to step into The George pub, which handily is located just opposite the castle. As a traditional 17th coaching inn, The George features exposed beams and roaring fires in winter and serves up hearty local dishes as well as 10 bedrooms for guests visiting from further afield.

To extend your trip, you could also pay a visit to Frome, just two miles from Nunney. Highlighted as one of the Times “Best Places to Live in Britain”, Frome is known for its historic buildings and independent shops.

As “the original Somerset Market Town”, Frome has continued the tradition, with regular markets every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. The Frome Independent Market also pops up on the first Sunday of each month between March and December.

Dubbed a “mini festival”, the monthly market takes over the whole town and attracts thousands of visitors to enjoy its shopping stalls as well as local food and drink vendors and street entertainment.
