There are a number of rare coins in circulation but many people do not know what they should be looking for, so one coin enthusiast has revealed all on an extremely rare 2p coin

Everybody has been urged to check their change as it’s possible you could be in possession of an extremely rare 2p coin worth around £1,000.

Coin collector and history enthusiast @CoinCollectingWizard made the claim in a viral TikTok video uploaded last week. It’s said that there could be a number of rare 2ps in circulation that are worth much more than their original value. The coin collector told his more than 205,000 followers that the coins are rare because of a mistake made during the production of a “small number of 1983 coins”. Essentially, anyone lucky to be in possession of a 1983 New Pence 2p could be in luck as it’s said to be worth around £1,000. In the video shared last week which has been viewed more than 75,000 times, TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard said: “Attention! This coin sells for £1,000. After the design changed from New Pence to Two Pence in 1982, a mistake was made during production of a small number of 1983 coins.

“These coins were actually struck with the old inscription New Pence. Whilst it’s known exactly how many of these error coins were struck, in 1983 2p coins were only struck for commemorative sets and not issued for circulation. “Evidence seems to suggest that affected coins were issued as part of special souvenir sets that also did not enter general circulation. Although if these sets were broken open and spent, then you could be in with the chance of finding one in your change.

“If you’re lucky enough to find a 1983 New Pence 2p in your change, then it is worth around £1,000. Remember that it’s the 1983 version of the coin which was struck in error and this is the one you should be looking out for. If you have any other date on your 2p coin then it is not rare and valuable.” As you would expect, the video has garnered plenty of attention and many TikTok users have flooded the comments. “I have it,” one person claimed. Another said: “I have this one!”

Many people claimed to have different versions of the 2p coin, with dates such as 1980, 1912 and 1969 on them, although @CoinCollectingWizard broke it to them that their 2p coin was not worth a fortune, as it did not have the 1983 date on it. Keep a lookout, everyone!
