WARNING, DISTRESSING CONTENT: Therese Cartwright was pulled under the waves by a great white shark and killed in front of her five children and husband, Ian, who only found a piece of her wetsuit and a leg remaining
A great white shark bit a mum of five in half and came back to eat the floating remains in front of her horrified children.
Therese Cartwright, 35, was pulled beneath the surface where she was cut in half with a powerful bite from the beats which detached her legs from the rest of her body. The incident off the coast of Tenth Island, Tasmania, Australia in 1993 left the kids horrified as they watched their mum pulled under the bloody waters.
The 35-year-old’s husband Ian and her children were on a boat just metres away from the incident, which saw the mum flailing for help and the children frantically trying to enter the water to save their mother.
Two friends of the family who had been diving with Therese swam back to the boat and then tried to reach Therese’s body. Ian spent hours looking for the remains of his wife but only a piece of her wetsuit and a leg has been recovered. Her death is the most recent shark attack in Tasmanian waters.
The group had been scuba diving alongside a large breeding colony of Australian sea lions at the time of her death. Comments on a recent YouTube video of the death saw members of the public react to the “horrifying” incident which has seen a new wave of grief from members of the public, the Daily Star reported.
One wrote: “That’s absolutely horrifying. My heart goes out to her family.” Another added: “And yet people keep doing the same mistake over and over, it’s like walking next to lions and expect them to do nothing. Rip to all people who had to go through this.”
A third wrote: “I will never understand the pursuit of danger and sometimes death that some humans seem to be attracted to. Jumping out of planes, jumping out of boats, climbing huge mountains, cave diving, even driving too fast. Sticking their heads in a lion’s mouth or crocodile ‘s mouth. There are so many more ways it seems people are tempting death. Humans are CRAZY.”
