Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge insists he is not to blame for the £37 price tag for fish and chips after being flooded with criticism over the pricey food in Harrods

TV chef Tom Kerridge has insisted he is not to blame for the £37 price tag for fish and chips at Kerridge’s Fish and Chips in Harrods – and gone on the attack over criticism.

Speaking to social media food site Topjaw, the TV chef told how he was not the one responsible for the pricing, just for sourcing the top ingredients for the dish. And he added those looking for “cheap and cheerful” should look elsewhere.

Tom, 51, said: “I have nothing to do with the pricing at Harrods, really. So I have everything to do with the quality of produce that we buy. It’s day boat fish. It’s really expensive, and all of those sorts of things. They set the price, that’s nothing to do with me.

“That backlash always comes back to me. But it’s also in the most beautiful food hall, arguably, in the world, in the most expensive shop, in the most expensive city, in the most expensive part of the city, in the world.

“It’s Harrods, everything about it is going to be expensive. If you’re expecting something cheap and cheerful, you don’t get cheap and cheerful in Harrods. You get a quality level.”

Sounding slightly annoyed the star of shows including The Great British Menu added: “In some ways I just find it very lazy journalism as well.” Tom, who has also appeared as a guest judge on MasterChef, has previously defended the dish in other interviews.

Speaking to The Times, he said: “Do the people who shout about the price of my fish and chips [£37] also shout at Ferrari when it launches a new car? If you’re getting the best you can get, that’s how much it is.”

The market day fish and chips at Harrods is served with chips, Matson curry sauce, tartare sauce and pease pudding for desert. The website promoting Kerridges fish and chips venue at Harrods says: “Trust in Tom Kerridge to take the UK’s favourite dish to new heights at his eponymous restaurant.”

It also suggests you could “pair yours with caviar and crème fraiche, or his homemade Matson curry sauce”. It says the chips take two days to be prepared before they arrive at your table.

Prices for other dishes on the menu aren’t cheap either with £80 lobster and caviar costing up to hundreds of pounds. Kerridge’s fish finger sandwich is £27 on the menu and a white bread roll and cultured butter is £6.

Kerridge’s Fish & Chips at Harrods has an excellent 8.7 out of 10 rating on The Fork, with several reviews commenting on the “tasty”, and “fresh” food. However, other food bloggers on social media have been less impressed. It has three stars on Google from 182 reviews.
