Tottenham beat Liverpool 1-0 in their first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash and it was Lucas Bergvall’s first goal for Spurs which separated the two teams

Lucas Bergvall scored his first Tottenham goal in a 1-0 win over Liverpool and believes the circumstances of his strike “couldn’t be better”.

The teenager was delighted after earning Spurs a huge victory in their first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Liverpool, firing home after some excellent work from Dominic Solanke in the build-up. Liverpool fumed at the goal though, with Bergvall having escaped a second yellow card for a challenge on Kostas Tsimikas moments earlier, and Tsimikas forced off the pitch during the build-up to the goal.

Reflecting on the victory and his winner, Bergvall told club media : “It’s unbelievable! To score my first goal here at home in front of all the supporters, and a 1-0 win against Liverpool, it couldn’t be better.

“It’s a crazy feeling. Ever since I signed for Spurs, this was a dream. I’ve scored my first goal and hopefully now there will be many more to come. As the game went on, I just felt I got more energy and we helped each other as a team, worked really hard.

“It’s been tough in the last few weeks. We haven’t won many games and that’s tough to take, but we just have to keep going. Today, we earned this win and hopefully we can keep it going.”

Bergvall joined Spurs from Swedish club Djurgardens over the summer and Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was delighted with the 18-year-old’s performance. “Lucas was brilliant,” he said in his post-match press conference.

“Lucas is just growing all the time. He’s got that ability as a footballer to create space for himself. He’s got the quality, but he works awfully hard for the team as well. Like I said, we’ve been dealing with some adversity for sure, but we’ve had some growth in that, I’ve got no doubt about that.

“That’s been masked by poor results and poor form for sure. I’ve got no doubt that when we get our players back, the foundations are really strong, with a group of players we can really grow with.”

Tottenham will be back in action on Sunday when they take on non-league side Tamworth in the FA Cup third round. They will then host local rivals Arsenal in the north London derby on Wednesday.
