Foodies have been warned off putting these three items in their air fryer as the easy-to-use appliance is not best suited for them, with dairy products struggling in particular

Foodies using their air fryer are still loving the easy-to-use kitchen appliance which has become an essential in recent years.

But those using the device have been warned never to put these three items inside of the tray. Whether it is cooking frozen items in half the time of an oven or reheating some leftover food, air fryers are a dominant kitchen appliance which is easy to use as well as fast to cook foods. But there are some foods which should be left out of air fryers.

Though the air fryer is an inexpensive piece of kit it should be noted there are some foods which do not cook well inside of the device. These can cause anything from a “gooey mess” to too much hassle for later cleaning of the appliance.

Kitchen hack expert Nicole Jaques took to TikTok and revealed three items you shouldn’t be putting in your air fryer, and explained why it was best to avoid cooking them in the device. Instead, opt for the oven or microwave to melt or make these dishes.

Anything with lots of cheese on the top was best left out of the air fryer according to Nicole, who said: “The cheese is going to melt before your item is cooked, creating a huge gooey mess.” You can still use cheese in your recipes of course, but note how quick it is to melt when in the air fryer.

Another food to avoid using in the air fryer is rice, as it can be difficult to cook evenly even with products specifically made to make the cooking process that much easier. She added: “Even with the special insert, it never cooks evenly. Just use a rice cooker instead.”

While these foods are still somewhat edible after being cooked in the air fryer for a period of time, there was one food which is best left out of the popular kitchen appliance entirely as it becomes a “flop” otherwise. Sour cream is to be avoided when it comes to the air fryer, and for good reason.

She revealed: “The sour cream in their dense batter of sugar and flour just becomes a flop in the air fryer. Don’t try it.” Which? has also provided their own details of what air fryer’s can do, saying it is your “best bet” for saving money when cooking. Their description of the appliance reads: “Often the air fryer used less than half the energy to cook the same food items, and the results were just as tasty.

“However the savings soon drop off if you have to double up on batches, as air fryers don’t have as much space as a typical oven or hob. So if you’re cooking a large amount of food, the oven or hob may still be the best bet.”
