Sick of buffing your windows, only to take a step back and realise they’re still covered in smears and streaks? One cleaning expert says there is an easy solution – and it’ll only cost you £1
Say a permanent farewell to those pesky window streaks with this genius hack that requires just two household staples. Glass can be an absolute nightmare to clean – even if you’ve been trying to buff away the smears for hours.
Brits often splash out on expensive products that guarantee a sparkling finish, but many of these chemical-riddled cleaners fail to melt away dust and grime without marring your windows and glass. With the sun making more of a regular appearance, those pesky streaks can be pretty hard to ignore – but what is the solution?
Cleaning expert Joyce French at HomeHow.co.uk says deep cleaning your windows is essential in Spring to allow sunlight to ‘flow freely into your home’. Her answer to a streak-free finish? Washing-up liquid and vinegar.

In a statement sent to the Mirror, the ace advised filling up a large bucket with ‘clean, cool water’ before adding a couple of drops of washing-up liquid. “Use a clean microfiber cloth or sponge to go over the surface of the window, working your way down from top to bottom,” she added.
Then, the pro recommends spraying the glass panes with a solution made up of vinegar and water, before using a ‘clean, lint-free towel’ to wipe them over. Joyce says this tried-and-tested method will guarantee you achieve that ‘perfect streak-free shine’.
You can pick up vinegar from your nearest supermarket or general store for less than £1 – just avoid the malt variety unless you want your bathroom to smell like a Fish & Chip shop. Sainsbury’s, for example, is currently selling a 568ml bottle for just 35p, price-matched with Aldi.
There’s no need to splash out on branded washing-up liquid like Fairy, either. A bottle of supermarket own-brand detergent – which will set you back around 69p, will also do the job.

Last year, cleaning enthusiasts also raved about a cult-favourite cleaning device that cuts down the level of smears with very little effort. Posting on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, one desperate user asked: “[What’s an] easy way to clean windows on the inside? Mine always come up in smears.”
Dozens recommended purchasing a My Cloth, with one user branding it ‘brilliant, quick and easy’. Another agreed, hailing: “My cloth, no cleaning products needed just water, polishes as it cleans. You shall not be disappointed,” while a third added: “Buy a My Cloth online, they’re amazing.”
The My Cloth, which only requires you to add water and then wring out until almost dry, can be bought online for around £4. “Trust me this cloth is the only cloth you will ever need,” one impressed customer wrote.
