New research has revealed the most satisfying noises in the kitchen, so we’ve put together a fun quiz to see if you can identify some of the most popular food sounds

Could you distinguish the sound of an egg frying, butter being spread on toast, or a nacho being crunched, purely from the audio?

Give this tasty quiz a go and see if your ears are as finely tuned as your taste buds.

The quiz follows a study of 2,000 adults which discovered that food-related sounds make people feel content, peckish, and cosy.

The research discovered that the most pleasing sound in the kitchen is ice cubes being dropped into a drink. Other popular sounds include hot food sizzling in a pan, butter being spread on toast, and melted cheese bubbling away.

Many Brits also enjoy the sound of tortilla chips being crunched, the snap of biting into a crispy nugget, and the munching of carrot sticks.

See if you can recognise all six sounds

The fun challenge was commissioned by Quorn to mark the launch of its new Cheesy Nacho Nuggs.

Gill Riley, spokesperson for the meat substitute brand, commented: “Our kitchen is the heartbeat of most homes, all year round it is filled with sounds and smells that we love, and even more so around Valentine’s Day.

“This definitive list of top sounds is satisfying in itself, showing how many noises we hear and create in the kitchen which make us feel content.

“The crunch, pop or crisp of foods helps inspire what people reach for as a snack or cook up for a family meal.”

Interestingly, nearly half of those polled believe certain foods taste better because of the sound they make while being cooked. A fifth admit to eating certain foods solely for the pleasure of the sounds they make, such as crisps, pancakes, and stir-fry.

The survey also revealed the most-loved kitchen aromas, with freshly baked bread topping the list at 63%, followed closely by the smell of brewed coffee at 49%.

One in four respondents reported watching ASMR food-related content on social media, with 44% finding it satisfying and 41% describing it as relaxing.

Gill Riley commented: “The nation loves listening to and watching food content on social media, proving how satisfying the concept of a good crunch is when biting into a nugget.

“It’s interesting to see how much influence all the senses have on what we eat. People are looking for delicious taste that comes with an equally delicious sound and smell.”
