Cleaning enthusiasts can’t stop raving about a £2 cleaning holy grail that removes stubborn stains and dirt from your once-white socks – without making them smell like bleach or vinegar

Fans of cleaning guru Mrs Hinch have found a natural hack to whiten dingy socks and removes stains in no time.

If your once white socks have started to look more like a pair of old dirty wash cloths, it’s probably time to give them a good old soak. While most people naturally turn to potent chemical-filled products like bleach for this not-so-pleasent task, there is actually a much more gentle way to restore your garments back to their former glory.

While white vinegar is often touted as the holy grail of natural cleaners, due to its acidic nature, nobody wants their feet to smell like the inside of a greasy chippy. So, what is the best way to to turn those rags back to new?

Taking to the popular Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page, which has more than 500,000 members, one user named Katherine uploaded a picture of her brown-stained socks fresh out of the washer. “They were washed with warm water and soaked with OxiClean,” she said, unhappy with the results she’d yielded.

Swathes of members flocked to the comments section to give their advice, with many recommending soda crystals. “I’m a mum of five boys and one girl and I always use soda crystals on their white socks,” one person raved, according to the Express. “It’s game-changing.”

Another agreed, commenting: “Soda crystals. It’s amazing stuff. It gets my blokes’ socks looking new again. I just add the soda crystals straight in the washing machine drum. A third added: “I have two boys and used to have the same problem. Now I just add a scoop of soda crystals to every white wash and they are now lovely and white,” while a fourth penned: “Soak in soda crystals and then wash as normal. The brown stains will be gone and the socks will come out like new.”

Also known as sodium carbonate decahydrate, soda crystals have long been hailed for their versatility – able to dissolved grease from pans and extractor fans, remove moss for slippy patio slabs, and help to keep your sinks and drains free from clogs. You can pick up a bag from your nearest supermarket or general store. For example, Sainsbury’s is currently selling a 1kg pouch for just £2.

Soda crystals should never come into contact with aluminium and should be avoided on varnished and lacquered surface. If you have sensitive skin, it is advised to avoid ‘prolonged contact’ with the powerful cleaning agent.
