A woman asked if she was in the wrong for refusing to let her step-sister borrow her wedding dress for her upcoming wedding, which resulted in her refusing to attend the upcoming wedding

Nothing brings families together like a wedding, but they can also come with some drama.

In a Reddit post, a 23-year-old woman explained how her family had turned against her after refusing to let her step-sister wear her wedding dress for her upcoming nuptials, leading her to return the wedding invite to her sister.

The woman explained how she’d recently gotten married to her husband a year prior. She wrote that her side of the family had been involved in the preparations – including her step father and her 26-year-old step-sister.

While she said her relationship with her mum and stepdad was good, it wasn’t as great with her sister, as they didn’t get along and used to fight a lot growing up.

“I’ve tried and I’m sure she also has, but it’s not about being different, it’s because she has always had very similar taste as me. We used to fight about our clothes, our toys and so on,” she explained.

She went on to explain that the sister had announced her engagement to her boyfriend at her wedding, and that she was now in the middle of planning her wedding.

“I’ve tried to help as much as I can since I already had most contacts fresh. She plans to marry a day after Christmas, so I thought everything was set and ready to go,” the woman explained, but she spoke too soon.

Her sister had called her crying, saying her wedding dress wouldn’t arrive in time for her wedding as it’d had some alterations done to it. For some context, no one knows how this dress looks because she wanted to ‘keep it a surprise for everyone’.

She said: “I tried to comfort her and I told her I knew some cute boutiques who had nice wedding dresses ready for her date. She cries harder, telling me she didn’t want any ‘cheap’ dress.

“I tried to calm her down once more before telling her I would call my stepdad to see what we could do. Before I could finish that sentence, she says out of the blue, ‘Can I wear your dress?'”

This shocked the woman, who went silent as the sister continued to explain how it’d be ‘perfect’ as they’re the same size and how she loved the dress when she’d seen her wear it.

The woman said no, and went on to explain in the post that the dress held sentimental value to her and wouldn’t be comfortable letting anyone borrow it, which didn’t go down well with her family.

“My messages have been exploding with my stepsister, her soon-to-be husband and my stepdad telling me how horrible I am for being so selfish,” she explained.

A few days later, she went to meet up with her step-sister to talk through the situation more, explaining that she didn’t want her to wear her wedding dress since it was so emotionally attached to her. But the sister wouldn’t listen and ‘went absolutely nuts’.

She explained: “She called me a selfish cow, telling me how I’m the most horrible human ever. “I tried to calm things down until I just couldn’t do it any more.

“I knew this was a possibility, so as soon as she started crying, I pulled out her wedding invitation and gave it back to her. I told her I wouldn’t be attending the wedding, but I hoped it all went perfectly.”

After explaining her situation, most Reddit users reassured her and said she shouldn’t feel obligated to let anyone wear her wedding dress, especially not so soon after the wedding.
