Cassie Laundrie has claimed she was contacted by police before she knew anything about Gabby Petito’s disappearance and claimed she has not spoken to her parents in two years
Brian Laundrie’s sister, Cassie Laundrie, has insisted she had no knowledge of Gabby Petito’s disappearance until law enforcement contacted her.
Cassie denied reports that she told police Brian had spoken about leaving Gabby at a Wyoming hotel before flying back to Florida without her. “No one from any family contacted me until Detective Barry called me,” Cassie wrote on Instagram, disputing claims made by Suffolk County detective Tracey Barry. “Det. Barry gravely miscommunicated what I told her on the phone.”
Cassie, who has consistently denied any involvement or knowledge of Gabby’s murder, also revealed she is estranged from her parents, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie. Responding to criticism on Instagram, she wrote: “If you’re new here and just starting to attack me today – I’ve been no-contact with my parents for almost two years. Have fun.”
Netflix’s American Murder: Gabby Petito delves into the tragic relationship between Gabby and Brian, which ended in her murder and his suicide. Brian strangled Gabby to death and abandoned her body in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park before returning to North Port, Florida, alone.
His parents, Christopher and Roberta, have been accused of helping him cover up the crime before he went into the Florida wilderness and took his own life. Throughout the investigation, Christopher and Roberta repeatedly refused to cooperate with authorities as Gabby’s family desperately searched for her.
The documentary highlights a disturbing “burn after reading” letter Roberta wrote to Brian, in which she allegedly offered to help him bury a body out of love. While she claims the note was written before Brian and Gabby’s trip, its undated nature left Gabby’s family feeling sickened.
In 2022, the Petito and Laundrie families reached a $3 million settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit. Gabby’s disappearance, and the discovery of her body on September 19, 2021, in a Wyoming national park, captivated the nation.
The case remained in the public eye during the weeks-long search for Brian, whose remains were eventually found in a Florida nature preserve in October 2021. The FBI concluded that Brian died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and left behind a note confessing to Gabby’s murder.
Before her death, Gabby had been in regular contact with her family, documenting her travels with Brian on social media, including YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. The couple had built a steady following before their story turned into a true-crime obsession.
According to the FBI, Brian sent text messages from Gabby’s phone to her parents and others in an attempt to make it seem like she was still alive. He was also charged with illegally using one of her credit cards before his remains were discovered.
Brian and Gabby, who were engaged, had both grown up in Blue Point, New York, before moving to North Port, Florida, in 2019, where his parents lived. It was from there that they set off on the road trip that ultimately ended in tragedy.
